Steichen House

Step into the pages of history and experience the Steichen House, a charming abode steeped in tales of the past. Constructed in 1904, this quaint dwelling served as the residence of the Steichen family, parents to the renowned photographer Edward Steichen, whose visionary works have left an enduring legacy in American art.

Yet, the significance of the Steichen House extends beyond its familial ties. In these walls, Edward's sister, Lillian, forged a fateful connection with Pulitzer Prize winner Carl Sandburg through their shared involvement in the Socialist Party in Milwaukee. Their acquaintance blossomed into a profound romance, documented through a heartfelt exchange of love letters.

In a poignant turn of events, Carl Sandburg visited Menomonee Falls in June of 1908, finding lodging in the welcoming embrace of Lillian's family home. Their bond deepened during his stay, culminating in a joyous union a week later.

Saved from oblivion by a community dedicated to preserving its heritage, the Steichen House found new life when it relocated to Old Falls Village in December 2002. After years of meticulous restoration and dedication, this historic treasure has been unveiled to the public, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in its captivating narrative and timeless charm.
